High Five from a Thankful Whale

A story that never gets old. In case you may have missed it...

A front page story in the San Francisco Chronicle told the story of a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. The whale also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.

A fisherman spotted the whale just east of the Farallon Islands (beyond the Golden Gate bridge) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived. They determined that the whale was so bad off that the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her. The team worked for hours, carefully slashing through the labyrinth of lines with curved knives. Eventually, they freed her.

The divers say that once the female humpback was free to move, she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. The whale then came back to each diver, one at a time, and gave each a nudge, pushing her rescuers gently around as she was thanking them. Some divers said it was the most beautiful experience of their lives.

The diver who cut the rope out of the whale’s mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time. And he will never be the same.

sweet revenge?

Tattoo artist Ryan Fitzgerald from Dayton, OH was hit with a $100,000 lawsuit last week by his ex-girlfriend Rossie Brovent. She claims that her boyfriend was supposed to tattoo a scene from Narnia on her back but instead tattooed an image of a pile of excrement with flies buzzing around it. Apparently, Ryan found out that Rossie had cheated with a long-time friend of his, but instead of confronting her about it he acted like everything was normal and hatched a plan for revenge. Originally, Rossie tried to have Ryan charged with assault, but the ingenious tattoo artist had covered his bases by plying Rossie with wine and tequila shots and getting her to sign a consent form that stated the design was “at the artist’s discretion.” No word from Rossie on whether the illicit night of passion with Ryan’s friend was worth it. Moral of the story? Never cheat on a tattoo artist.

Got a Deal

Guest post written by Kevin Beach

I found a direct tv deal when I moved into my new place but my mom, being as nosy as she is, insisted on going over it before I was “allowed” to sign anything. Let me be clear, I’m almost 30 years old but my mom thinks it’s her place to still tell me what to do and make all my decisions for me. Clearly, it’s not. I just don’t know how to tell her that I want to do my own research and make my own decisions even if that does mean I make some mistakes along the way. I mean, we’re not talking about life or death stuff here, just some household utilities and painting and stuff like that. I think she’s extra cautious now since I don’t live at home anymore but I love having the freedom and responsibility of my own place. I can’t believe it took me this long to look for something new but I sure am glad I did just to gain some independence!

Smoke this...

Smoking is so dirty, stinky and gross to some people.  Non-smokers can't stand it when someone is smoking in a space that is close to them.  It was finally eliminated in most places.  Other places made a 'smoking' section or a 'smoking' room.  As we all know though, the smoke travels through the air and still smells bad.  Non-smokers also do not want to breathing in second had smoke and risk cancer from cigarettes that they are not even smoking.

There are some people that say the answer to this problem is the electronic cigarette.  We're told that there is no smell, tar, tobacco or ash.  The electronic cigarette is filled with a cartridge.  There is 'smoke' that resembles cigarette smoke, but is actually water vapor.  It even comes in different flavors for the smoker to try.  There is a menthol flavor and a cherry flavor.

I'm not sure if this is the answer for non-smokers and smokers to agree on them being in the same place at the same time.  Non-smokers may still feel uncomfortable around the electronic cigarette.  One reason may be that it seems to take so long for them to figure out if something is bad for us or not.  People may fell like until it is confirmed - which is usually years later - that they still may want to stay clear of all smoking products.  Maybe not.

Funny Smoking Commercial

Seasons Change

My favorite time of year is finally here.  I love the colder weather.  It is also my favorite wardrobe weather.  I can find everything I need at Dave's New York.
I love choosing an outdoor jacket when getting ready to go out.  I like coordinating my outfit with the weather. A long jacket or a Canada goose parka is the perfect choice for a casual day of activities.  We usually go to football games, the pumpkin patch to pick pumpkins and to the local Fall Festival before needing a heavier coat.
When the weather calls for something warmer, the Canada goose down coat is a good coat choice.  When you put it on, your ready for a day of sledding, ice skating, and snowball fights.
So, I am ready for a great fall and winter season filled with holidays and activities.  The house is filled with the smell of baking, the leaves are changing colors and costumes are on all the kids minds.   Most of all my favorite thing this time of year is spending it with my family.  This year, like all the previous, I vow to slow down and enjoy my wonderful life.  I hope you all will do the same ~ enjoy.

bringing fashion back to the classroom

Guest post written by Kelly Grant

It's so great when I found out that I even still had a teaching job this fall, but then the next thing that I thought about was that it would be really fun to try and come up with some new outfits to wear this fall while I'm teaching. I got a little lazy last year and started repeating a whole lot of outfits. Then when I realized I was doing that I started incorporating pieces that weren't necessarily the most office appropriate. Not like I was wearing any crazy high heels or anything. Mainly it was just my pieces that weren't exactly crew necks that I started wearing too. Well, I don't want to get in that rut this year too.
While I was online looking for some styling tips, I came across the website Internet.Clear.Com. After I looked through it a little bit I decided to change over my apartment's internet service to it.
I found all kinds of teacher fashion tips, like making sure that I use fun accessories to change up my look rather than find a lot of new pieces of clothing.

has anyone seen the electronic cigarette

the first time i saw an electronic cigarette was when i was watching the real housewives of beverly hills.  the women were at a dinner party when some crazy lady was there puffing away on the electric cigarette.  it was easy to make fun of because the lady was a complete b*tch.
after i gave it some thought, i thought that in spite of the crazy lady smoking the e cigarette, what a great way to help smokers quit smoking cigarettes.

the electronic cigarette is a battery powered. it has a vaporized solution inside that releases nicotine when you inhale.  they say that the e cigarette isn't as bad for you as smoking a real cigarette.  they look like a normal cigarette but you can also get them in the shape of different objects - like a pen.  they are refillable and different flavors can also be purchased.  there is some 'smoke' that comes from the electronic cigarette.  the smoke that you see when people are using the gadget is actually water vapor from the atomized substances.  they say the smoke is orderless.

i have never been a smoker.  the smell of cigarette smoke or anything else someone is smoking drives me crazy.  so, maybe this is a better for smokers and non-smokers.  my personal opinion, don't smoke at all.

amy winehouse ~ back to black - belgrade 6.18.2011

The troubled singer was booed by fans at a concert in Belgrade after she slurred her words, stumbled around the stage and appeared to be too under the influence to perform.

Winehouse left a rehab clinic at the start of June and her new 12-date tour was supposed to be alcohol free.

2 killed in bear crash

When a 200-kilogram black bear was hit by a car in western Quebec's Pontiac region and hurled into the air, there was simply no time for the driver of a SUV to swerve.
In a bizarre accident, the 25-year-old Ottawa woman driving a SUV and the 40-year-old man in the seat behind her were killed instantly when the animal plowed through the windshield with such force that it shot straight through the back window.
Only the woman's 28-year-old boyfriend, who was riding in the front passenger seat, survived.
Meanwhile, the two men in the car that originally hit the bear were unharmed.
The freak collision near Luskville, Que., said MRC des Collines de l'Outaouais police.
The car was being driven along the two-lane stretch of highway by a 23-year-old Gatineau man with a 19-year-old Gatineau man in the passenger seat. The adolescent bear did not survive.
MRC des Collines spokesman Const. Martin Fournel said that the bear was thrown up in the air by the low-riding, aerodynamic car, then struck the SUV's higher, more vertical windshield on the driver's side.
"They had no chance," he said.
The driver's identity is not being released at the request of her family, but the rear passenger was identified as Steven Leon, 40, of Gatineau, Que. Gatineau is directly north of Ottawa.
The driver's boyfriend, whose name has not been released, was in the front passenger seat and suffered only minor upper body injuries. He was treated at the Hospital and released.
Leon's last Facebook update was posted just after 11 a.m. that morning. "What a great day outside," it reads. "Time for some 3 wheelin'. Who says Mondays suck!!! LOL"
Fournel said alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The speed limit along that stretch of highway is 90 km/h, and it was not yet known whether speed played a role. Police, paramedics, firefighters and Quebec's transportation ministry probed the scene, and their investigation continues.

police looking for 'goldilocks'

http://www.fastforwardblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Goldilocks.jpgBritish police appealed for help in finding a suspected burglar they have dubbed "Goldilocks" because he breaks into houses, eats food and then has a sleep.
Essex detectives said they were trying to trace Jesse Dobinson who is suspected of carrying out two burglaries at a house northeast of London, in February and March.
"On both occasions beds in the property were slept in and food eaten before items, including electrical goods, were stolen," police said in a statement.
Dobinson is also wanted in connection with an assault and a knife point robbery.

ke$ha wants your teeth ~ yikes!!!

Ke$ha has made a weird request on Twitter - she wants fans to send her their teeth so that she can make a necklace to wear at awards shows.

The 'TiK ToK' hitmaker has repeatedly hit the headlines for her controversial comments and stunts, including drinking what appeared to be blood from an animal heart during a gig earlier this year.

Now the singer is appealing to her devotees to offer up their molars after one fan gave her inspiration for an outlandish jewellery item.

"I've received 1 tooth from a fan. I made it into a necklace. But now I really wanna make a fan tooth necklace to wear to an awards show. So. What I'm getting at is please send me your teeth. I'm dead serious. I need your teeth," Contactmusic quoted her as tweeting.

boy in a dryer

An 11-year-old boy gets the scare of his life, seeking shelter from a tornado in a dryer.
Austin Miller's mother called him from work as storms swept through the town of Lenox in Iowa, telling him to take shelter. The home doesn't have a basement."I said, 'Get in the laundry room.' There is not a basement and I said, 'Just get in the laundry room,' and he said 'Why mommy?' and I said, "Just get in laundry room.' And then the sirens went off," said Jessica Miller. As she tried desperately to get home, two twisters whipped debris into a blinding mess on local streets."(Austin) said, "Mommy there's glass breaking, it's loud crackling. It's loud and I think the house is going,'" Jessica Miller said. "I mean I was like two blocks away. I could not get here. It was the worst feeling, I can't even explain."While she was on the phone with Austin, the wind tore the home's roof away and rain pounded inside. With debris flying through the air, Austin took shelter in the only place he could."He was just like, "Mommy I'm so scared, I'm so scared," and he ended up getting in the dryer," Jessica Miller said. A short time later, Jessica ran through the front door yelling her son's name. She said he popped right out of the laundry room uninjured -- amazing given the damage the storms caused."I think he's a very smart boy," she said.

tornado outbreak

April's ferocity was one for the record books: There were more tornadoes in April 2011 than in any month in U.S. history. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates there were more than 600 tornadoes in April, shattering the record of 543 set in May 2003.

With an estimated 327 deaths, the tornado outbreak April 25-28 was the third-deadliest on record, behind 1925 with 747 and 1932 with 332.

http://www.arthursclipart.org/nature/nature/tornado%203.gifThe staggering death toll from the tornado outbreak in April 2011-- the deadliest U.S. natural disaster since Hurricane Katrina in 2005 -- comes as the National Weather Service reports that the average lead time for tornado warnings was 24 minutes, and that warnings were in effect for more than 90% of the tornadoes. Tornado warning lead time is the difference from when the warning was issued and the time the tornado was on the ground, said weather service meteorologist John Ferree in Norman, Oklahoma.

Ferree said that during the past few years, average tornado warning lead time has been about 14 minutes. This compares with 3 to 5 minutes in the 1980s and early 1990s, before the installation of a national network of Doppler radars and the weather service's modernization.

Tornado warning accuracy is the percentage of tornadoes that occur within areas under warnings. The percentage has increased from around 30% to 40% in the 1980s and early 1990s to around 75% by the early 2000s, Ferree said.

Were it not for tornado warnings, the average annual death toll in the USA from tornadoes would be about 1,000 people, said Kevin Simmons, an economist at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. The Storm Prediction Center says an average 60 people are killed by tornadoes in the USA each year.

There have been an estimated 887 tornadoes in 2011. The year with the most was 2004, when 1,817 were reported, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

american dad

Thanks for the post from Bertha Randall

The other day I realized that most of the shows I tend to watch have one singular character that draws my interest. With the show How I met your Mother, it's Barney Stinson. The Office has Dwight Schrute. For American Dad, it's Roger, the alien. I wouldn't want to live his lifestyle, but I enjoy watching it. I guess that's why I also enjoy watching a lot of reality TV. Something about watching a train wreck is hard to avoid. Roger, dressed up as a human, always seems to find reach soaring heights in life only to crash down in some overdosed style fashion.
The original premise of the show was actually about a CIA dad, Stan Smith, and his relationships with his wife, son and his daughter. Roger was more of a side character who was thrown in for punchlines. While the show still focuses on those aforementioned relationships, the relationship between Roger and Stan has been a point of emphasis to develop over the past few seasons and the show is better for it. And it's not better because it leads to more character development or something that would enhance an episodes plot. It's better because there are way more funny moments and that is what sitcoms are there for -- to make us laugh. So I'll be continuing to catch American Dad on satellite TV from directstartv.com and laughing my head off in the process.

reese witherspoon stinky egg game

http://vegetarianorganicblog.com/pix/organic_easter_egg_dye.jpgActress Reese Witherspoon has planned a bizarre egg race to play with her family on Easter.

Witherspoon, who lives on a California ranch with new husband Jim Toth and her two children, says she would love to make full use of having surplus eggs of 21 chickens on her farm.

'I was trying to think of new games you can play. So I went online and there's this game where you stuff as many eggs into your tube socks as possible. And then you have to run a race. And whoever ends up at the end of the race with the least amount of broken eggs wins!'

'It's actually super fun, because the adults get competitive. We started whacking each others shins and ankles, grabbing each other, taking each other down. Especially me, because I'm a little bit competitive. Literally, it's disgusting. And it smells like rotten eggs for about three weeks. But it's fun,' she said.

why birds fly into windows

Chris Leahy of Mass Audubon explains male birds become territorial, and by singing they advertise they want to mate. But that singing also tells other birds to stay out of his space, said Leahy.
When they see themselves in a window something happens. “They don’t perceive that this is a reflection. They think it’s a rival, and they will attack this reflection,” said Leahy.
It should end when breeding season is over, but it will start up again in late summer when the second breeding season begins.
Experts say birds probably won’t hurt themselves doing this.

man charged after barking at dog

Police say an Ohio man has been charged with a misdemeanor for barking at a police dog.
A police report says 25-year-old Ryan James Stephens was charged with teasing a police dog in the Cincinnati suburb of Mason.
Officer Bradley Walker wrote that he heard the K9 dog barking uncontrollably inside his patrol car while he was investigating a car crash at a pub early Sunday morning.
Walker says Stephens was making barking noises and hissing at the animal.
Walker reported that Stephens said "the dog started it" when asked why he was harassing the animal.
The officer said Stephens appeared highly intoxicated.

crash saves choking trucker

A Pennsylvania trucker may have saved his own life with an unintentional and very elaborate Heimlich maneuver.
Police say 55-year-old Richard Paylor, of Fairless Hills, was eating an apple as he drove on a busy highway in Reading, Pa. when he began choking. Authorities say Paylor then lost consciousness and crashed through a concrete median.
The Reading Eagle reports investigators believe the apple was dislodged when Paylor smacked his chest against the steering wheel. Police recovered a chunk of apple from the dashboard.
Investigators spoke with doctors who backed up their conclusion that the accident dislodged the offending fruit.

mice in pizzeria

A pizzeria owner with mice problems who he blamed on competitors, tried to sabotage two rival shops by dumping mice in on them, authorities in suburban Philadelphia said.
Upper Darby police said a man walked into Verona Pizza on  and asked to use the bathroom. After he left, the owner said he found footprints on the toilet and noticed that the drop ceiling had been disturbed, and he found a bag tucked up above.
The owner turned the bag over to two police officers who happened to be eating lunch there, and they found three white mice inside, police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.
Police say the man then walked across the street to Uncle Nick's Pizza and dumped another bag into a trash can inside the establishment, and police found five live mice and one dead one inside.
"We have never had anything like this where mice have been used as an instrument of crime," Chitwood said.
"This is food terrorism by mice."
Nikolas Galiatsatos, 47, owner of Nina's Bella Pizzeria a few blocks away, faces charges of disorderly conduct, harassment and animal cruelty, police said.
Chitwood told reporters that investigators believe Galiatsatos was having mice problems himself that he blamed on his competitors.
"We believe that he's trying to put the competitive pizza places out of business," Chitwood said. He said the mice, apparently purchased that day at a nearby pet store, have been turned over to animal control officers.
Galiatsatos remained in custody and it was unclear whether he had an attorney. A call to his shop was referred to a man who said he was Galiatsatos' father but declined to give his name and declined to comment.

baby gets locked in a vault

A 14-month-old girl who wandered away from her mother and grandmother spent several tense hours trapped inside a time-locked bank vault and authorities pumped fresh air through vents to the crying child until a locksmith freed her, police said.
The locksmith pried the toddler unharmed from the vault about four hours after she went missing while visiting a grandparent who worked at a Wells Fargo bank branch in the greater Atlanta suburb of Conyers. Authorities say police and firefighters couldn't free the toddler and feverishly summoned the locksmith after the child apparently strayed into the open vault as the bank was closing  - before an employee shut the vault door for the day. Conyers Police Chief Gene Wilson told reporters it was a "very tense scene" as authorities stood by along with the relatives, and rescue workers pumped fresh air into vents leading to the vault.  The child was spotted on security cameras inside the vault, which has a time-release lock.  The locksmith used a large drill to breach the vault about four hours after it had been closed.

hairiest girl in the world

An 11-year-old Thai girl has insisted she is delighted to have been recognized by Guinness World Records as the planet's hairiest girl.

Supatra Sasuphan - nicknamed Nat - has been called "wolf girl" and "monkey face" for the thick hair that grows on her face, ears, arms, legs and back as a result of Ambras Syndrome.
But the Bangkok girl has not let that stand in her way, forming close friendships with other children and being embraced by her local community.
Now, she says the title has made her even more popular at school.
"I'm very happy to be in the Guinness World Records," she said.
"A lot of people have to do a lot to get in. All I did was answer a few questions and then they gave it to me."
There have only been 50 recorded cases of Ambras Syndrome since the Middle Ages and the symptoms of facial hair growth earned the sufferers reputations as werewolves.
"There were a few people who used to tease me and call me monkey face but they don't do it any more," Supatra explained.
'Wolf Girl' Supatra SasuphanDespite her condition, the bubbly pre-teen is like any other girl her age and enjoys dancing and swimming, as well as watching cartoons on television.
To be recognized by Guinness World Records, Supatra had her hair measured on Italian show Lo Show dei Record in Rome on 4 March 2010.
There is no cure for the syndrome and although doctors have tried different treatments to remove the hair, including laser therapy, it has always grown back.
The hair is thickening as she gets older, meaning Supatra's mother has to trim it to keep it out of her eyes.
But the happy 11 year old said she is used to the condition and it does not make her uncomfortable - although she would like to be cured one day.
Supatra has endured health problems since she was born and had difficulty breathing until two operations to enlarge her nostrils.

knife removed from mans head after 4 years

Surgeons in southern China successfully removed a rusty, 4-inch (10-centimeter) knife from the skull of a man who said it had been stuck in there for four years, the hospital said Friday.
Li Fuyan, 30, had been suffering from severe headaches, bad breath and breathing difficulties but never knew the cause of his discomfort, said the senior official at the Yuxi City People's Hospital in Yunnan Province. Li told doctors he had been stabbed in the lower right jaw by a robber four years ago and the blade broke off inside his head without anyone realizing it, said the director of the hospital's Communist Party committee's office who would only give his surname, He. Surgeons worked cautiously to remove the badly-corroded blade without shattering it, He said. The hospital's website also reported the successful surgery. The case, which one of the doctors described as a "miracle," has been widely covered by the Chinese media and discussed on the Internet. "We checked his mouth, but no wound or scar has been found. It is very strange as to how the blade got into his head," Xu Wen, deputy director of the hospital's stomatology department. CCTV showed footage of the rusted knife and interviewed Li, who said: "As time passed, I used injections to kill the pain in my head and ears. It has been four years already." Dr. Eugene Flamm, chairman of neurosurgery at New York's Montefiore Medical Center, said X-ray images of the man's head posted on the hospital's website show the knife sitting behind the man's throat, having missed the carotid artery and other key structures. "There are planes and spaces between important organs. That's how one does surgery - you dissect in those planes, move the trachea one way, the esophagus the other," he said. "Maybe out of sheer luck this knife passed through" one such area, Flamm said, adding that he was still surprised at the time the blade supposedly spent in the man's body.

a mexican teenagers hunger strike

In a bizarre attempt to secure an invitation to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, a Mexican teenager is staging a hunger strike outside the British Embassy in Mexico City.

Estibalis Chavez revealed she had not eaten for the past eight days and was surviving on just water as she camps in a blue tent near the gates to the embassy, reports the Telegraph.

"Are they going to let me die just because they wouldn't give me an invitation to the royal wedding?" the 19-year-old wrote on one of the flyers she has plastered near the entrance to the colonial-style building.

"This is my only dream," read another flyer next to a picture of the smiling royal couple.

Chavez, who has also taken her cause to the Facebook social networking site, said the late Princess Diana had inspired her campaign.

"I think she was one of the most interesting women in history, and one of the best and most beautiful," she said.

"My mother was a big fan of Lady Di too and she died when I was born, so I promised myself I would attend her son's wedding.

"The embassy could talk to Britain for me but they haven't," she said. "But I'm going to stay here until I can't go on," she added.

snake lost on train

A woman whose 3-foot-long snake slithered away from her in a Boston subway car and hid there for nearly a month has gotten a hefty cleaning bill.
Transit officials want Allston, Mass., resident Melissa Moorhouse to pay $650 to cover the costs of disinfecting and sanitizing the Red Line train to protect passengers from germs such as salmonella that may have been left by a boa constrictor named Penelope.
Moorhouse had traveled with the snake around her neck and lost it between stations 6 Jan. 2011. The snake was spotted on the train earlier this month by a commuter.
Moorhouse says she'll pay more attention the next time she takes the snake out in public.

crocodile eats phone

http://www.wildlife-pictures-online.com/image-files/crocodile_cc-0245-g.jpg

Gena, a 14-year-old crocodile in Ukraine at an aquarium in the eastern city of Dnipropetrovsk, has been refusing food after eating a cell phone dropped by a woman as she tried to photograph him.
Aquarium workers initially didn't believe Rimma Golovko, a new mother in her 20s, when she complained that the crocodile had swallowed her phone. "But then the phone started ringing and the sound was coming from inside our Gena's stomach and we understood she wasn't lying," said Alexandra, an employee who declined to give her last name as she wasn't authorized to speak publicly. Golovko admits the accident was her fault. She stretched out her arm to snap a photo of Gena opening his mouth and dropped her Nokia phone into the water. "This should have been a very dramatic shot, but things didn't work out," she said. Golovko is resigned to losing her phone, but still wants its SIM card back since that has her precious photos and contacts. The mishap has caused bigger problems for the crocodile, which has not eaten or had a bowel movement in four weeks and appears depressed and in pain. "The animal is not feeling well," said Alexandra. "His behavior has changed, he moves very little and swims much less than he used to." Doctors tried to whet the crocodile's appetite this week by feeding him live quail rather than the pork or beef he usually gets once a week. The quail were injected with vitamins and a laxative, but while Gena smothered one bird, he didn't eat it. He also won't play with three fellow African crocodiles, despite being the leader in the group. Crocodiles can live up to 100 years. "He is the biggest and the oldest, perhaps he went for the phone to protect his group," Alexandra said. Dnipropetrovsk chief veterinarian Oleksandr Shushlenko said the crocodile will be taken for an X-ray next week if he continues to refuse food. Surgically removing the phone would be a measure of last resort, he said, since incisions and stitches usually take at least three weeks to heal in reptiles and the procedure is dangerous for the animal and the vets. "Everything will depend on where the foreign body is located," Shushlenko said. "We don't have much experience working with such large animals." The crocodile in "Peter Pan" with the ticking stomach was on the hunt for Captain Hook after getting a taste for the pirate's flesh from eating one of his hands. But luckily for Hook, he could always hear the crocodile coming.

coffee spill triggered hijack alert

A pilot's spilled coffee accidentally triggered a hijacking alert and caused a United Airlines flight from Chicago to Frankfurt, Germany, to make an unscheduled stop in Canada.
A Transport Canada report said United Flight 940 was diverted to Toronto and landed safely at Pearson International Airport. The coffee spill caused distress signals to go out, including code 7500, which means hijacking or unlawful interference. The report says Canada's defense department was notified, but that with the help of United dispatch staff the flight crew confirmed it to be a communication issue and not a hijacking. The report on Transport Canada's website said the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration reported that United's corporate office had indicated that the pilot "had inadvertently squawked a 7500 code after spilling coffee on the aircraft's radio equipment, which interfered with the communications equipment." "The flight crew had advised that they had communication problems and subsequently reported that they had some navigation problems as well and from there the pilot in the command diverted the flight onto Toronto," Maryse Durette, a Transport Canada spokeswoman, said. "It was a beverage. During light turbulence one of the crew members beverages spilled which then caused issues with the airplanes communications equipment," Johnson said. Johnson said the crew was in contact with air traffic control throughout. He said that the pilot elected to divert the flight rather than cross the Atlantic Ocean while experiencing a communications problem. The Boeing 777 was carrying 241 passengers and 14 crew members. Johnson said United flew them back to Chicago on another plane and put them up in hotel rooms overnight. They flew to Germany the next day. United spokesman Rahsaan Johnson acknowledged 5 January 2011 that one of three cockpit crew members caused the mishap by spilling a drink.
